The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va., Bob Molinaro Column: Castleberry's Radio Show Puts His 1310 Jobs in Limbo

…president of radio for Max Media, which owns the AM sports talker. "I've told our partners that. "

Castleberry is not employed by 1310 -- he works for ODU and the Tides. Said Mastel: "I may ask them not to use John."

He may already have asked them to replace Castleberry, though all parties involved agree that no decision has yet been made. A mostly tight-lipped general manager Dave Rosenfield said Thursday the Tides would "wait and see" what discussions among the parties brings down the road.

The Tides signed an extension with 1310 last year, but the deal between ODU and the station runs out before next season. Negotiations between the two parties for a new contract are ongoing, with Castleberry's status reportedly a point of contention.

"We anticipate completing our two-year contract extension sometime in mid-to late-spring," said ODU director of athletics Jim Jarrett, adding that he wants to continue on with both ESPN radio and Castleberry.

Keeping Castleberry is a priority for ODU, which appears to have more leverage than the Tides because of the school's contract situation with 1310.

For his part, Castleberry leaves no doubt about his allegiance to the Monarchs.

"Old Dominion is my first love, as far as play-by-play goes," he said.

Castleberry spoke Thursday just before going on the air at The Game. The day before, he hosted…

…everyone clamors for a piece of their success.

"What if Jack had all 43 cars?" Wells asked. "I know that's probably an extreme, but where does it stop? Five cars? Seven? Ten? Twelve?"

Bigger teams would mean fewer teams, which NASCAR fears will slow its impressive growth over the past decade. Wells pointed to the makeup of the other major sports while making his plea for greater diversity.

"When ownership is spread over a large group of people, like it is in any other sport, that breeds new ideas, provides better competition and makes the sponsor base more even," he said.

Sponsorship is the most crucial element to any team. Wells would like to add a second car next year _ he figures it would cost only 70 percent of what he's paying for his first car because of shared resources _ but hasn't found anyone willing to step up with even that much money.

"It's a fantasy right now," Wells said, rolling his eyes.

Of course, just because a team has more than one car doesn't necessarily mean it will be successful.

Ganassi has three drivers and plans to add a fourth next year, but the team hasn't won a race since 2002. Petty, which usually runs at least two cars, is winding down its sixth straight season without a win.

Kyle Petty, who drives his family's No. 45 car, doesn't begrudge the success of teams such as Roush and Hendrick.

"Roush helped build this sport into what it is. Hendrick helped build the sport into what it…

…off, too. The American cops demonstrated how to suppress a riot, firing volley after volley of rubber bullets.

The French police were duly impressed, according to local news reports. So much so they collected the empty canisters to take home as souvenirs.

Something's rotten at Car Talk

Ah, the smell of burning rubber in the morning. Or, more accurately, the lovely aroma emitted as a car equipped with Kumho Ecsta DX tires squeals out when the traffic light turns green.

The "Car Talk'' guys from National Public Radio sure like it. On their Feb. 3 show "Click and Clack''-the Magliozzi brothers, Tom and Ray-had lots of fun commenting on the tire South Korea's Kumho Tire Co. Ltd. is marketing.

"Tire with a fragrance? I don't think that's new, really,'' Ray said. "I've seen tires with fragrances before, but it was right after they ran over something.''

Tom explained that heat-resistant oils are imbedded in the rubber, so that when the tire wears down the fragrance is released. "And you have your choice of lavender, orange or jasmine. Now isn't that sweet?''

Ray said there's a bigger opportunity available for the fragrant tire, beyond female consumers.
