…So I think that is something the people who want to buy these cars will make a statement I think they are in the market.

To me, I saw a story today in the Wall Street about a diesel. A diesel is 20 to 25% better than a gasoline. It is cheaper, there is great technology out there and I think it is less complex. Over in Europe today when you look at the UK I think 60% of the vehicles that are sold, what we call the popular cars, are all diesel. I think hybrid is a great technology but you are seeing some competing thoughts process, your diesel and now you are going to see hydrogen also coming in at some point but I think that is ten years from now before we see it efficient and not subsidized.

Until recently, in-car sound systems were an afterthought. Radios, tape decks and CD players were generally pretty poor quality. Music competed with engine noise, sounds were muffled in the rear seats and tapes snarled in dashdecks. Then digital technology arrived and manufacturers realised that commissioning bespoke systems from domestic hi-fi specialists would win the audiophile vote hands down.

"Anyone who is into music wants an incar system comparable with their purpose-built system at home, so it can be high on the priority list when choosing a new car," says Andy Madden of Stuff magazine. And David Schwarz, a former hi-fi dealer who now delivers cars for a living, adds: "It's engine first, colour second and stereo third these days."

Lexus was first off the blocks by inviting hi-fi specialist Mark Levinson - whose domestic systems cost Pounds 50,000-plus - to design a bespoke system. The latest Lexus LS460, launching this month, has 19 speakers with a 15-channel amplifier belting out 450 watts. Aston Martin, meanwhile, has teamed up with Scottish hi-fi specialist Linn on its DB9.

Audi turned to Danish audiovisual experts Bang Olufsen, following a long association over its aluminium engineering expertise. The optional sound systems are tailor-made for the Audi A8 and S8 plus the sporty R8 (launching this spring) and buyers of around half the S8 models sold in Britain last year splashed out nearly Pounds 4,000 to enjoy them.
